Phygital Innovation in Health Services

As I have mentioned before, I am PhD candidate in the Information and Knowledge Management Department at the University of Ankara-Turkey. I have created this website to give you latest news on Artificial Intelligence and Brain and also share my academic studies with you.

If you have never heard of Phygital before, I would start by explaining this term. Phygital (physical plus digital) is a marketing term that describes blending digital experiences with physical ones. In short, Physical technology with a Digital experience..

In collaboration with The American Institute for Healthcare Quality (AIHQ), the Society of Healthcare Academicians, Integrated Solutions for Healthcare Quality and USA and with the support of Turkish Standards Institute, European Organization for Quality, Turkish Organization for Quality (Kal Der), Baskent University and many associations and organizations within the sector, 10. International Congress on Quality in Healthcare Accreditation and Patient Safety held in Antalya on the 11th – 14th May 2016.

The mission of the Congress with many representatives of international organizations, was interpretation of practices, benefits and global trends in the context of quality and accreditation in healthcare services. This Congress created a platform to discuss current situation of providing health care service and quality primarily in Turkey and in the world.

I and my friends from GATA NCO Health College, Ankara (PhD Student Fatih Orhan and Selahattin Tuncer) participated this congress by an oral presentation titled “Last Point in Phygital Innovation in Health Services: Human Brain Project in view of Future Science”.

Understanding the human brain is one of the greatest challenges facing 21st century science. The aim of this study was an in-depth analysis of “Human Brain Project” and “Artificial Intelligence” considered as the most important researches on digital and physical-digital innovation in the Health System.

The concept of digital and physical-digital innovation, which is new in the literature was explained in this study. Some innovative activities, considered to be important related to the subject in the health system were also mentioned.

In order to analyze the subject in-depth, “The Human Brain Project” and “Artificial Intelligence” researches, described as the 21st century’s most important researches were detailed. “Big Brain Project”, “Blue Brain Project” and “Human Brain Project” issues were examined in the context of digital and physical-digital innovation.

We believe that each innovative project, carried out with a multidisciplinary approach in the health system, brings the acquisition of very important achievements. With locating phygital platform in health system appropriately, many innovative ideas are considered to be implemented. We consider that this study will contribute to the literature and raise innovation awareness in terms of health system stakeholders.

I would like to share with you our presentation and 2 minute video recorded at this congress. PhD Student Fatih Orhan from GATA NCO Health College, Ankara presented this oral presentation.

What is Big Brain Project?
Big Brain Project, High-resolution 3D digital atlas of the human brain was created through slicing the brain protected after death into 7404 sections with 20 micrometers thick and determining the location of the nerve cells in the brain for 1000 hours of labor.

What is Blue Brain Project?
Blue Brain Project, the study of creation of brain’s micro-circuits was done through simulating approximately 8 million nerve cells and 6300 synapses to a real mouse brain.

What is Human Brain Project?
Human Brain Project is the most ambitious neuroscience project ever launched. Its goal is develop methods that will enable a deep understanding of how the human brain operates. More than 130 research institutions in 23 countries -particularly EU countries- and approximately 2000 expert scientists participated and 1.2 billion Euros is reserved. This Project, lasting 10 years is expected to break new ground especially in the field of medicine and it is considered to be a key role for the development of information technology and medicine.
