Amazon significantly expanded its army of warehouse robots in 2016, according to a report by The Seattle Times.

The newspaper — based in the same city as Amazon’s global headquarters — wrote last week that the e-commerce giant now has 45,000 robots across 20 fulfillment centers.

That would be a 50% increase from the same time the year before when the company said it had 30,000 robots working alongside 230,000 people.

Amazon bought a robotics company called Kiva Systems in 2012 for $775 million (£632 million). Kiva’s robots automate the picking and packing process at large warehouses in a way that stands to help Amazon become more efficient. The robots — 16 inches tall and almost 145 kilograms — can run at 5 mph and haul packages weighing up to 317 kilograms. (http://uk.businessinsider.com)

A robot which was made in China was reprogrammed after it repeatedly interrupted the country’s Minister of Communications Ahmet Arslan during his speech. The robot, named “Sanbot,” was the presenter for an event in Ankara to mark Safer Internet Day and was programmed to welcome guests on stage.  

The machine interrupted the minister’s speech multiple times, urging him to speak slowly.

“Speak slowly, I do not understand what you said. What are you talking about?” Sanbot interrupted Minister’s words several times.

Minister found himself in the unusual position of being heckled by a robot and tried to laugh it off but then asked for robot to be brought under control:

​“Dear friends, it is clear someone should get the robot under control. Please, do what is necessary,” 

The robot was then muted on the stage during the minister’s speech.

Following the speech, the robot was formatted, officials said.

Robot apologised to Minister

After a few days, Kanal D News found Sanbot and interviewed with it. In response to the question “Why did you interrupt the minister?”, Sanbot said, “It was a mistake, I am very sorry”.

But what nobody’s talking about is the revolution happening right now. Artificial intelligence and robots are replacing a lot of mid-level producers, too. They’re working their way rapidly through the low-level jobs and increasingly making a presence in the mid-level positions.
