He uses <strong>artificial intelligence<\/strong> to explore and enhance understanding of the world, transforming any type of information, whether it is visual, acoustic, or semantic, into interactive tools that are beautiful and simple to use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">He explores and develops new ways to experience data:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Creating new techniques to display and visualize data;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Experimenting with new interaction methods and user involvement;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Introducing artificial intelligence to help users analyze information;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Creating transparent and more intuitive machine learning models;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Finally, always trying to introduce beauty and elegance in every interactive narrative.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Originally from Italy, Mauro Martino is the creator and director of the <em>\u201cCognitive Visualization Lab\u201d<\/em> at <em>IBM Research<\/em>, with offices in Cambridge, MA and New York City. He is a Professor of Practice at <em>Northeastern University<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">His work appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines, including The Guardian, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Washington Post, S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung, Der Spiegel, Le Figaro, Corriere della Sera, National Geographic, Scientific American, Popular Science, Wired, MIT News, and Harvard News, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">In 2016 his work has been featured in important textbooks such as <em>\u201cNetwork Medicine\u201d<\/em> from Harvard University Press, and <em>\u201cNetwork Science\u201d<\/em> from Cambridge University Press, and the textbooks about data visualization: <em>\u201cData Visualization\u201d<\/em> (SAGE Publications) and <em>\u201cThe Truthful Art\u201d<\/em> (New Riders Press).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Mauro is an award-winning designer whose projects received the <em>Innovation by Design Award 2016<\/em> by Fast Company, <em>Kantar Information is Beautiful Award 2016<\/em>, <em>The 2016 Vizzies Visualization Challenge<\/em> by National Science Foundation and Popular Science, Gold Medal in Data visualization at the Kantar Information is beautiful awards 2015, and finalist at The 2015 Vizzies Visualization Challenge, to name the most recent awards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">His works have also been featured in the books <em>\u201cThe Best American Infographics&#8221;<\/em> 2015 and 2016 editions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">The tools and videos he has developed are viewed by millions of users every year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Mauro was formerly an Assistant Research Professor at Northeastern University working with <em>Albert-Laszlo Barabasi<\/em> at <a href=\"http:\/\/barabasilab.neu.edu\/\"><em>Center for Complex <\/em><\/a><em>Network<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/barabasilab.neu.edu\/\"><em> Research<\/em><\/a> and with <em>David Lazer<\/em> and Fellows at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iq.harvard.edu\/people\/mauro-martino\"><em>The Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS)<\/em><\/a> at <em>Harvard University<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">Previously, he was a research affiliate with the <a href=\"http:\/\/senseable.mit.edu\/\"><em>SENSEable City Lab<\/em><\/a> at <em>Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)<\/em> in Cambridge, working on data visualization within the lab\u2019s many projects and his related research project, Urban Interaction Design while earning a PhD in Design and Technologies at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. His focus was to innovate the ways we visualize and explore of massive amount of human mobility and telecommunications data, in partnerships with <em>Airsage &#8211; AT&amp;T &#8211; BT &#8211; Orange \u2013 Sprint \u2013 TDC &#8211; Telecom Italia<\/em> and in different nations Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Italy, USA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Open Sans';\">His projects have been shown at international festivals including Ars Electronica, TEDx Cambridge THRIVE, RIXC Art Science Festival, TEDx Riga.
