Women and Alzheimer’s Disease

Did You Know that two out of every three people with Alzheimer’s disease are women?

In the past, it’s thought that more women develop Alzheimer’s since they live longer than men.

However, women may be at more risk than men in the first place due to a variety of reasons, like genetics or hormones.

Estrogen has been shown to reduce beta-amyloid which is the “bad protein” that collects in the brain.

So, the decline in estrogen over the course of menopause may play a role.

One would think that hormone replacement therapy could help, but there have been mixed results.

Some studies have shown that hormones may help if given early on, but may accelerate decline if given later.

More research is needed but in the meantime there are many things we can do to reduce risk.
