Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the field of computer science dedicated to developing machines that will be able to mimic and perform the same tasks just as a human would.

AI researchers spend time on finding a feasible alternative to the human mind. The rapid development of computers after its arrival 50 years ago has helped the researchers take great steps towards this goal of mimicking a human.

Modern-day applications like speech recognition, robots playing chess, table tennis and playing music have been making the dream of these researchers true. But according to AI philosophy, AI is considered to be divided into two major types, namely Weak AI and Strong AI. Weak AI is the thinking focused on the development of technology capable of carrying out pre-planned moves based on some rules and applying these to achieve a certain goal. As opposed to that, Strong AI is developing technology that can think and function similar to humans, not just mimicking human behavior in a certain domain.

What is weak AI?

The principle behind Weak AI is simply the fact that machines can be made to act as if they are intelligent. For example, when a human player plays chess against a computer, the human player may feel as if the computer is actually making impressive moves. But the chess application is not thinking and planning at all. All the moves it makes are previously fed into the computer by a human and that is how it is ensured that the software will make the right moves at the right times.

What is strong AI?

The principle behind Strong AI is that the machines could be made to think or in other words, could represent human minds in the future. If that is the case, those machines will have the ability to reason, think and do all functions that a human is capable of doing. But according to most people, this technology will never be developed or at least it will take a very long time. However, Strong AI, which is in its infant stage, promises a lot due to the recent developments in nanotechnology. Nanobots, which can help us fight diseases and also make us more intelligent, are being designed. Furthermore, the development of an artificial neural network, which can function as a proper human being, is being looked at as a future application of Strong AI.

What is the difference between Strong AI and Weak AI?

Weak AI and Strong AI are two types of AI, classified based on the goals that the corresponding sets of researchers are focused on achieving. Weak AI is focused on the technology which is capable of carrying out pre-planned moves based on some rules and applying these to achieve a certain goal but, Strong AI is based on coming up with a technology that can think and function very similar to humans. So, the applications of Weak AI make the humans feel that the machines are acting intelligently (but they are not). Contrastingly, the applications of Strong AI will (someday) actually act and think just as a human, as opposed to just making the humans feel that the machines are intelligent.

Joscha Bach (AI researcher) who worked and published about cognitive architectures, mental representation, emotion, social modeling, and multi-agent system, is explaining the impact and possible dangers of Strong AI and other issues on AI.

Why we should be concerned about something nobody knows how to build Synopsis: At the moment, nobody fully knows how to create an intelligent system that rivals or exceed human capabilities (Strong AI). The impact and possible dangers of Strong AI appear to concern mostly those futurists that are not working in day-to-day AI research. This, in turn, gives rise to the idea that Strong AI is merely a myth, a sci-fi trope and nothing that is ever going to be implemented.

The current state of the art in AI is already sufficient to lead to irrevocable changes in labor markets, economy, warfare, and governance. The need to deal with these near term changes does not absolve us from considering the implications of being no longer the most intelligent beings on this planet.

Despite the difficulties of developing Strong AI, there is no obvious reason why the principles embedded in biological brains should be outside of the range of what our engineering can achieve in the near future. While it is unlikely that current narrow AI systems will neatly scale towards general modeling and problem solving, many of the significant open questions in developing Strong AI appear to be known and solvable.

Given significant developments in Artificial Intelligence, it’s worth asking: What aspects of ideal AI have not been achieved yet? There is a good reason for the growing media storm around AI – many experts agree on the big picture that with the development of Superintelligent AI (including Artificial General Intelligence) humanity will face great challenges (some polls suggest that AGI is not far). Though in order to best manage both the opportunities and risks we need to achieve a clearer picture – this requires sensitivity to ambiguity, the precision of expression and attention to theoretical detail in understanding the implications of AI, communicating/discussing AI, and ultimately engineering beneficial AI.

Talk held at ‘Artificial Intelligence / Human Possibilities’ event as an adjunct to the AGI17 conference in Melbourne 2017. With AI Experts Ben Goertzel, Marcus Hutter, Peter Cheeseman, and Joscha Bach.

Dr. Joscha Bach (MIT Media Lab and the Harvard Program for Evolutionary Dynamics) is an AI researcher who works and writes about cognitive architectures, mental representation, emotion, social modeling, and multi-agent systems. He is founder of the MicroPsi project, in which virtual agents are constructed and used in a computer model to discover and describe the interactions of emotion, motivation, and cognition of situated agents. Bach’s mission to build a model of the mind is the bedrock research in the creation of Strong AI, i.e. cognition on par with that of a human being. He is especially interested in the philosophy of AI and in the augmentation of the human mind.
