Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a mental disorder that causes extreme mood swings, characterised by severe depression and mania.

People with bipolar disorder experience periods of unusually intense emotion, changes in sleep patterns and activity levels, and unusual behaviors.
